Frequently Asked Questions

You don't come to SouthCoast Health looking for old-fashioned “don't ask questions, just do what you're told” medicine. That's no path to Total Wellness for Life, and it's incompatible with our patient-centered philosophy.

We want you to ask questions, lots of questions. We want you to get all the answers you need to have a pleasant and productive appointment with your doctor. And we want to answer any questions that come up for you as you follow your plan for better living.

Here are answers to some questions that frequently come up for SouthCoast Health patients. If you don't find here the answers to your questions, please contact us. We'll make sure your questions get answered.

What should I do to prepare for my appointment with a SouthCoast Health doctor?

In order to make the most of your SouthCoast Health appointment, please refer to our Appointment Checklist, which will help you plan for a pleasant and productive visit.

Why do you recommend I establish a relationship with a SouthCoast Health primary care doctor? Can't I just go to the specialist I need?

You are welcome to make an appointment directly with a specialist. It's your health and you're in charge. However, to fully unlock the benefits of Total Wellness for Life, we strongly recommend establishing a relationship with a SouthCoast Health primary care physician.

Your primary care physician is your most important partner in Total Wellness for Life. They are the family doctor who considers the complete picture of your health, and the trusted advisor who works most closely with you to develop your plan for better living. Your primary care physician also coordinates your care across our integrated network of dedicated specialists and medical professionals, ensuring you get the right top quality care at the right time, no headaches or hassles.

If you haven't already, please consider establishing a relationship with a SouthCoast Health primary care physician.

Will SouthCoast Health specialists work with my primary care physician who is not part of the SouthCoast Health network?

Of course! We're glad to hear that you already have a relationship with a trusted primary care physician. We love working with dedicated family doctors, whether they have a solo practice, or work with another healthcare network or hospital. In fact, many of our network doctors also work at local hospitals, so your primary care physicians may already be a colleague of some of our doctors.

If your doctor doesn't already know about SouthCoast Health, please direct them to our Physician Resources, where they'll learn how to refer you to a SouthCoast Health specialist as part of their plan for your overall health.

What insurance providers does SouthCoast Health accept?

We don't want your health insurance to get in the way of you receiving SouthCoast Health's top priority care. That's why we accept most major health insurance providers, including Humana and Coventry from the National Health Insurance Marketplace. See if your health insurance is one of our many Participating Health Plans.

Who can I contact if I have questions after my appointment?

If you have a medical question, need a prescription refill, or want to schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor, please contact your physician's office directly or log in to the Patient Portal.

If this doesn't get you the answer you need, then please see our Contact page for other options.

How does SouthCoast Health protect my privacy?

Can I access my SouthCoast Health medical history and test results online?

What if I want a second opinion about my doctor's diagnosis or recommended treatment?

We're big believers at SouthCoast Health in patient-centered care. If, after talking with your doctor, you feel that a second opinion will help you more confidently make a decision about your plan for better living, we encourage you to get one. Your doctor will be happy to recommend another doctor to give you a second opinion. You can also find a doctor through our website. Either way, your doctor will, at your request and with your authorization, gladly provide the second doctor with test results and other information that will help them make their own recommendation.
