Beat the Heat: How to Safely Manage Savannah's Hot Summer Weather

Wednesday, June 15, 2016

If you live in or around Savannah, you know all about extreme summer heat. A summer day spent running errands, shopping, or doing anything outside can quickly drain you without the right protection. Come late summer in July and August, when many Savannah residents will be heading outside to spend time at the beach or park, the heat is even worse.

However, there is no reason you and your family have to miss out on the fun. The best defense is a good offense and that means protecting yourself from the heat while still enjoying the perks of life in Savannah.

“When it comes to extreme summer weather, it’s important to know how and why you are vulnerable,” said SouthCoast Health primary care physician Dr. Adam Novack. “If you are aware of those vulnerabilities, like dehydration, sun burn, and fatigue, you can take steps to prevent them while still being able to spend time outdoors.”

Here are four tips from the health experts at SouthCoast Health to help you and your family to beat the heat:

1. Make Water Your Drink of Choice

You might be tempted to have a cold soda while outside this summer, but water is the better choice. If your family is planning a day outside, make sure everyone has a bottle of water and is drinking. Thirst is a sign of dehydration; so don’t wait until your throat is dry. Drink water continually throughout the day and avoid anything with alcohol or large amounts of sugar.

2. Dress for the Weather

June in Savannah is not the time to wear black. Pick light-colored clothing that is loose fitting and comfortable. Don’t forget to protect your body from bug bites and ticks, too, if you wear short pants and plan to spend time at the park or on a hike. Apply insect repellent liberally and avoid walking on grass as much as possible. Add a hat to your ensemble, as well. This protects your head and face from the sun!

3. Identify Cool Rest Spots

These are places you can head to if you need a break from the sun throughout the day, like an air-conditioned building or a shady spot that will allow you to cool off a bit. This is especially important if you’re attending one of Savannah’s many outdoor summer festival, concerts, or community events. At these events also be sure to know where the first aid stand is located. In the case of a heat-related emergency they can usually provide ice packs and water.

4. Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen

It can’t be said enough, don’t forget the sunscreen to protect your skin when spending extended time outdoors. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher. Also be sure to use one that provides broad-spectrum protection.
