In late 2016, Darkus Jenkins, a 36-year-old chemistry professor at Savannah State University, had just stopped breastfeeding her 11-month-old daughter when she noticed a lump in her breast. By early 2017, she received a diagnosis of triple negative, stage II breast cancer. At the dawn of her daughter’s young life, her own life lay in the balance.
