COVID-19: Where Are We Now?

Thursday, December 11, 2025

Beginning in March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic made an everlasting impact on us all and on healthcare in general. Now more than five years later, the way we look at the disease may have changed, but it’s still with us. And how we approach the current COVID-19 situation, from our personal health to care decisions to risk management, continues to be important.

The Current COVID-19 Situation

While COVID-19 continues to be a dangerous infection, vaccination and prior infection have led to more widespread immunity. This, combined with greater treatment availability, is resulting in lower hospitalization and death rates compared to earlier waves of the disease. In June 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that weekly hospital admissions for COVID-19 decreased by more than 75% and deaths by more than 90% compared to January 2022. In short, the CDC said the disease now resembles other respiratory viruses such as the flu or RSV.

Although the risk has lowered in general, older adults, the immunocompromised, and those with underlying medical conditions are among those still at a higher risk for getting very sick with COVID-19. The elderly are at highest risk. According to the CDC, more than 81% of COVID-19 deaths occur in people over age 65.

As the virus continues to circulate, it’s important to stay aware of current variants and their symptoms, as well as COVID-19’s seasonal patterns. CDC data from late September shows illness declined across most states after a summer surge. However, an article published by Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) stated that based on previous COVID seasons, the 2025/2026 winter surge is expected to be more severe.

Staying Safe From COVID-19

Taking proactive measures matters. SouthCoast Health recommends the following forward-thinking action items in response to the coronavirus.

Vaccinations and Booster Shots: COVID-19 vaccines remain one of our strongest tools. They’re proven safe, effective, and essential for protecting both ourselves and those around us. Immunity from vaccines and infections lessens over time, and booster shots play an important role. COVID-19 vaccine recommendations have been in flux in recent months. However, in early October, the CDC backed a recommendation from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) to make the vaccine available for everyone 6 months and older, encouraging people to make the decision together with their healthcare provider. If you are unsure about getting the vaccine, SouthCoast Health providers are available to discuss your individual risk.

Manage Chronic Conditions: No matter what chronic condition you may be facing, regular management is crucial. Some, such as diabetes and heart disease, increase the risk of serious illness related to COVID-19. It’s yet another incentive to stay on top of whatever ails you.

Practice Preventative Behaviors: Basic preventative measures can make a difference. Maintain good hygiene by covering your coughs and sneezes, washing and sanitizing your hands regularly, and keeping frequently touched surfaces clean.

Get Help When Needed: If you’re at higher risk for serious illness, don’t wait. Reach out to your SouthCoast Health provider as soon as possible to get tested and/or start treatment. Beginning treatment within a few days after symptoms first appear can reduce the risk of getting seriously sick.

Keeping Others Safer: Although isolation guidelines have changed, a good rule of thumb is to simply stay home when you’re sick. CDC guidelines stress that taking the suggested precautions when you have a respiratory virus such as COVID-19 can help stop the spread to others, especially those at higher risk.
