SouthCoast Health infectious disease physician Dr. Christopher Saling recently appeared on WTOC’s Morning Break to discuss the rise in measles cases in our region.
During the segment, Dr. Saling explained that measles is one of the most contagious viruses and can remain in the air for more than two hours after an infected person has left a room. Because of its high transmission rate, people who are not vaccinated have about a 90% chance of infection if exposed.
He also reviewed early symptoms of measles, which often begin with fever and the “three C’s”: cough, conjunctivitis (red eyes), and coryza (runny nose). These symptoms may be followed by Koplik spots in the mouth and the well-known measles rash.
Dr. Saling noted that measles can lead to serious complications, particularly for college students, international travelers, healthcare workers, and individuals who are immunocompromised. Because the measles vaccine is a live vaccine, some immunosuppressed individuals cannot receive it, making community vaccination and herd immunity especially important.
He also advised anyone experiencing symptoms consistent with measles to self-isolate and contact their healthcare provider by phone before visiting a medical office to help prevent further spread.
