John Skeadas knows the importance of choosing a primary care physician who forges strong connections with patients. In fact, his relationship with SouthCoast Health’s Dr. Jules Victor helped identify a prostate cancer diagnosis and guide him through the treatment process, potentially saving his life.
A patient of Dr. Victor’s for decades, Skeadas says the physician has always been a rock along his personal healthcare journey.
“You get personal care from Dr. Victor,” Skeadas explains. “He's unbelievably kind, giving, and never rushes. He’s 100% totally invested in the patient. You’re not a number with him, and he takes great care in diagnosing everyone. If you need him, he’s always available.”
Year after year, Skeadas stayed on top of annual screenings, including prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests, and everything remained in the normal range. However, in late 2024, the 66-year-old Dutch Island resident noticed blood in his urine.
While he was up to date on his screenings, Skeadas knew responding quickly to blood in his urine was the right and important thing to do. He immediately contacted Dr. Victor, who suggested a series of additional PSA tests. The screenings revealed elevated numbers, pointing to the possibility of prostate cancer. Dr. Victor recommended Skeadas schedule an appointment with a urologist to examine his prostate.
“Healthcare is a partnership between you and your doctor,” Dr. Victor says. “While annual check-ups and PSA screenings are extremely important when it comes to the early detection of prostate cancer, it is important to communicate with your physician when there are signs that something is not quite right.”
The urologist suggested an MRI and subsequent biopsy. The biopsy results uncovered exactly what Skeadas feared: Stage 3 prostate cancer.
Skeadas went straight to Dr. Victor for consultation and guidance. “He's an unbelievably positive person,” Skeadas says. “He immediately said, ‘Well, it's not Stage 4, it's Stage 3. You've got a tremendous chance, and we can beat this.”
Dr. Victor recommended Skeadas receive a PSMA scan to make sure the prostate cancer hadn’t spread elsewhere in the body. Much-needed good news arrived when Skeadas learned the PSMA showed the cancer had not metastasized. Specialists discussed a plan with Dr. Victor, and they suggested six weeks of radiation beginning in the summer of 2025 followed by two years of hormone therapy.
Dr. Victor continued serving as the central hub for Skeadas’s care. Having collaborated closely with the Skeadas’ specialists, Dr. Victor followed suit throughout the radiation treatment, monitoring the progress every step of the way. In the midst of treatment, Skeadas says he spoke with Dr. Victor two to three times a week, sometimes daily. “The emotional support was just invaluable,” Skeadas says. “He checked on me constantly, asking if there was anything he could do. He’s a world-class physician, and his communication couldn’t have been better.”
Today, Skeadas’s PSA is undetectable and his cancer is officially in remission. Radiation treatment now behind him, Skeadas will continue hormone therapy and have his PSA checked every three months.
“All I can say is thank God for Dr. Victor,” Skeadas says. “He was just phenomenal the whole way and was right there with me. And he still is.”
