How a Bold Idea and a Converted Grocery Store Changed Regional Healthcare

Every great organization starts with a simple question. Thirty years ago, ours was “How can we provide better care for our patients?”

In 1996, SouthCoast Health wasn’t the expansive network of providers it is today. It wasn’t a multi-specialty healthcare leader serving communities across the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry, nor was it recognized for nationally ranked quality outcomes. It was simply a small group of Savannah physicians meeting regularly to discuss a rapidly changing medical landscape.

As medicine evolved, these founders recognized a growing challenge of operating independent, isolated practices was making care fragmented for patients. They realized that both physicians and patients would benefit immensely if doctors worked together across specialties under one roof. What began as weekly conversations around a table quickly turned into a shared vision that would ultimately transform healthcare throughout the region.

With just 20 physicians taking a leap of faith together, SouthCoast Health was born.

A Bold Leap of Faith

Turning that vision into reality required more than determination. It required an unexpected move.

Rather than operating out of separate offices scattered throughout the city, the founders envisioned a centralized medical campus where physicians could easily consult with one another and patients could access comprehensive care in a single, convenient location.

Their solution? The group purchased and transformed a vacant grocery store on Eisenhower Drive into SouthCoast Health’s very first medical campus.

At the time, multi-specialty physician groups under one roof were rare in this region. Yet the founders firmly believed that by working collaboratively, they could improve communication between doctors, make healthcare more convenient for families, and build an organization capable of growing alongside the region.

Looking back, that bold investment became far more than just a building. It established a culture of collaboration, innovation, and patient-centered care that continues to define SouthCoast Health 30 years later.

Growing with Purpose

Over the next three decades, as families flooded into our region, SouthCoast Health grew right alongside them. New providers joined the team, additional specialties were introduced, and new neighborhood locations opened to make receiving care closer to home easier than ever.

Healthcare has changed dramatically since 1996. Medical technology has advanced, patient expectations have evolved, and our communities have experienced incredible growth. Through every shift, SouthCoast Health has adapted, but our core culture has remained remarkably constant. The spirit of teamwork that inspired those original 20 physicians still guides our doctors, advanced practice providers, nurses, and support staff today.

The transformed building on Eisenhower Drive may no longer be a grocery store, and our practice has grown far beyond what those founders originally imagined. But as SouthCoast Health celebrates its 30th anniversary, our core purpose remains clear of delivering compassionate, coordinated healthcare that puts patients first.

From our humble beginnings to a regional healthcare network, thank you for trusting us with your health. Celebrate 30 Years with SouthCoast Health.
