As students head back to school, a properly fitted backpack can make a big difference in preventing unnecessary aches, pains, and injuries.
SouthCoast Health pediatric nurse practitioner, Haley Conaway recently joined WTOC's Morning Break to discuss "heavy backpack syndrome" and share simple steps parents can take to help children carry their backpacks safely. During the interview, she explained how backpacks that are too heavy or too large can place added strain on a child's neck, shoulders, and back while also affecting balance and stability.
Conaway also demonstrated how a backpack should fit properly and offered practical tips for reducing strain, including packing only essential items, adjusting shoulder straps so the backpack sits close to the body, and considering backpacks with chest or waist straps to help distribute weight more evenly.
