What Savannah-Area Residents Should Know About the West Nile Virus Detected in Chatham County

The Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed that a resident in Chatham County contracted the West Nile virus, a mosquito-borne illness that can cause serious health complications in some people. While most people infected with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms, others may experience flu-like illness, and in rare cases, the virus can cause severe neurological disease.

With mosquito activity continuing across Georgia, knowing the symptoms and taking steps to prevent mosquito bites can help protect you and your family.

Know the Symptoms

Most people infected with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms. However some develop a fever and other symptoms, which may include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Body aches
  • Joint pain
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash

In rare cases, West Nile virus can cause severe illness affecting the nervous system, including encephalitis or meningitis. Seek medical attention right away for symptoms such as severe headache, high fever, stiff neck, confusion, muscle weakness, tremors or seizures.

Older adults and people with certain medical conditions may be at greater risk for severe illness.

How to Protect Yourself From Mosquito Bites

The best way to reduce your risk of West Nile virus is to prevent mosquito bites. SouthCoast Health recommends that community members:

  • Use insect repellent containing an EPA-registered active ingredient when spending time outdoors.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants when practical, particularly when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Keep doors and windows closed or use screens to help keep mosquitoes outside.
  • Remove standing water around your home where mosquitoes can breed, including water in flowerpots, buckets, toys, gutters and other containers.
  • Take extra precautions during outdoor activities, particularly during times when mosquitoes are most active.
