When it comes to healthcare, Carol Silvestro, a 73-year-old retired nurse, admits her standards are high. That’s why she and her husband, Arthur, have remained SouthCoast Health patients for decades.
Silvestro values a multi-specialty, community-minded practice led by physicians with strong, clear communication and fast-acting advocacy. Those expectations, she says, are always met at SouthCoast Health.
“I wouldn’t go anywhere else,” Carol Silvestro says. “I trust them with my life and with my family.”
Her SouthCoast Health journey began in the early 2000s when she began looking for a new primary care physician. She was initially drawn to the practice thanks to the reputation of Dr. Christopher Oldfield, a former colleague, who is her family doctor to this day.
She says Dr. Oldfield consistently validates her symptoms, pushes for answers when other doctors outside of the practice have dismissed her concerns, and handles complex medical coordination seamlessly. According to Carol Silvestro, her confidence in Dr. Oldfield led her and her husband to explore other providers among SouthCoast Health’s wide-ranging roster of specialists. Solid communication, she explains, is consistent throughout the entire practice.
“As a (retired) nurse, I question everything,” Carol Silvestro says, “but all of the providers I’ve encountered at SouthCoast have excellent bedside manner. They sit me down and explain exactly what's going on in layman’s terms without rushing.”
She describes her SouthCoast Health experience as “one-stop shopping” with its comprehensive on-site services under one umbrella. She and her husband, as well as other members of their family, regularly take advantage of the array of specialties and services available, from nephrology to cardiology. For example, Carol Silvestro visits the SouthCoast Health infusion center for her osteoporosis treatment, and Arthur Silvestro has had moles removed in his primary care physician’s office. This kind of continuity, she says, helps with care coordination and streamlines referrals.
The Silvestro family’s SouthCoast Health success stories are plentiful. After noticing an alarming spot on her tongue, Carol Silvestro was seen by a SouthCoast nurse practitioner, referred to an ENT, and had the tongue biopsied, all within a two-hour window. Another instance found Arthur Silvestro seeking help after he punctured his eye. Dr. Oldfield immediately took him in and routed him to eye care specialist Dr. Edward Sammons to fix the injury. When Arthur Silvestro recently required an urgent brain MRI, an area hospital gave a wait time of one month. However, Dr. Oldfield's office was able to schedule it within days.
“Immediacy is the most important thing,” Carol Silvestro says. “Timeliness can save lives, and that’s what you’ll find at SouthCoast.”
As Carol Silvestro and her husband navigate their current health challenges, she says it’s clear why SouthCoast Health continues thriving as a practice 30 years on. “You feel genuinely cared for, not just as a patient, but as a person,” she explains. “The providers are the best at what they do, and they’re community minded. You couldn’t ask for anything more.”
Stories like Carol Silvestro's reflect the relationships, trust, and commitment that have defined the practice since 1996. As SouthCoast Health celebrates this milestone, we remain dedicated to providing compassionate, coordinated care for our communities for many years to come.
